Green Line Overview

Kolkata Metro Green Line runs 17.60 km between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector-V across 12 stations, forming the city's East-West corridor and India's first underwater metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly River.

From Howrah Maidan, the Green Line crosses under the Hooghly River to Howrah and Mahakaran, then reaches Esplanade in central Kolkata before continuing east through Sealdah and Phoolbagan to Salt Lake Stadium, City Center, and Karunamoyee, terminating at Salt Lake Sector-V, the heart of Kolkata's IT corridor. Esplanade is the Green Line's interchange with the Blue Line.

The Green Line links Howrah railway station — one of India's busiest — directly to Sealdah railway station and the Salt Lake tech hub, home to major IT and business process offices. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade underwater stretch, opened in 2024, was the first metro tunnel in India to run beneath a river. Kolkata Metro Green Line Completes Full East-West Corridor: Sealdah-Esplanade Section Opens, August 2025

Kolkata Metro's Green Line became a single continuous corridor on 22 August 2025, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final 2.63 km Sealdah-Esplanade stretch. This joined the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade underwater section, opened in March 2024, with the existing Salt Lake Sector V-Sealdah stretch. The new stretch connects Sealdah, one of India's busiest railway terminals, directly to the Esplanade interchange, cutting the Howrah-to-Sealdah journey from around 50 minutes by road to about 11 minutes by metro.

Kolkata Metro Green Line Opens India's First Underwater Tunnel: Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Section, March 2024

Kolkata Metro's Green Line opened its Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section on 6 March 2024, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 4.8 km stretch. It became the first metro line in India to run under a major river, with 520 metres of twin tunnels passing beneath the Hooghly River. Public services began on 15 March 2024. The section has four stations: Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah and Howrah Maidan. Howrah station sits about 33 metres below ground, the deepest metro station in India.
