Kochi Metro Overview
Kochi Metro is Kerala's rapid transit network, operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), a central-state joint venture. The Blue Line runs 25.61 km with 25 operational Kochi Metro stations between Aluva and Tripunithura, mostly elevated, with trains running daily from 6:00 AM to about 10:30 PM at a peak-hour frequency of around 8 minutes.
The line connects Aluva in the north — near Cochin International Airport — to Kalamassery and Cochin University, then through the central business district at Kaloor, Town Hall, and MG Road, continuing via Ernakulam South and Vyttila to terminate at Tripunithura in the south. A Phase 2 extension from JLN Stadium to InfoPark and Kakkanad, adding 11 more stations, was under construction in 2026 with a target completion of June-December 2026. Kochi Metro also integrates with Kochi Water Metro ferries at several stations, and does not yet have a rail interchange since only one line is currently open.
Kochi Metro fare is zone-based, from ₹10 for short hops up to ₹60 for the longest journeys, with the Kochi1 Card — also usable on buses and Kochi Water Metro — giving up to a 20% discount over single-journey tickets. Kochi Metro Phase 3 DPR Submitted: 17.5 km Aluva to Angamaly Line With 15 Stations via Cochin Airport
Kochi Metro Rail Limited has submitted the detailed project report for Phase 3, a 17.5 km line from Aluva to Angamaly that serves Cochin International Airport on the way.
The route follows NH44 from Aluva to Kariyad on an elevated viaduct, then runs 3 km underground to reach the airport at Nedumbassery. Fifteen stations are proposed, with separate stops for the airport and the airport railway station.
The report is now with the Kerala government, and goes to the Union Ministry of Urban Affairs after that. A link to Angamaly railway station was left out of the plan.
Kochi Metro Carries Record 36.5 Million Passengers in 2025, Crosses 175 Million Cumulative Rides
Kochi Metro Rail Limited closed 2025 with more than 36.5 million passengers on its metro rail network, a 4.2% rise over 2024, taking cumulative ridership since the June 2017 launch past 175 million.
Water Metro, KMRL's integrated ferry service, carried over 2.33 million passengers in 2025, a 15% increase from the previous year. December 2025 alone recorded 3.27 million metro rail passengers, with Water Metro hitting a single-day peak of 17,058 riders on December 28.
Kochi Metro Wins National 'Best Green Transport Initiative' Award for Solar-Powered Network, November 2025
Kochi Metro Rail Limited received the 'City with Best Green Transport Initiative' award from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs at the Urban Mobility India Conference in Gurugram on November 15, 2025. Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar presented the award to KMRL managing director Loknath Behera.
The award recognised that Kochi Metro meets 53% of its energy requirement through solar power, generating 11.33 MW from panels on stations, depots and the corridor, cutting over 13,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.
Kochi Metro Posts Rs 33.34 Crore Operating Profit for FY25, Third Straight Year in Surplus
Kochi Metro Rail Limited posted an operating profit of Rs 33.34 crore for FY 2024-25, its third consecutive year of surplus, up from Rs 22.94 crore in FY 2023-24. Operating income for the year stood at Rs 182.37 crore, with Rs 111.88 crore from ticket revenue and Rs 55.41 crore from non-fare sources such as property and advertising.
KMRL had posted an operating loss of Rs 24.19 crore in its first full year, 2017-18, before turning its first surplus in 2022-23.
Kochi Metro Pink Line Phase 2 Running 100 Days Behind Schedule, First 5 Stations Still Targeted for June 2026
Kochi Metro's 11.2 km Pink Line Phase 2, running from JLN Stadium through Kakkanad to Infopark, is about 100 days behind its original schedule, KMRL managing director Loknath Behera said in August 2025. The delay stems from unexpected utility shifting, underground pipeline relocation, and a pending Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank loan of around Rs 914 crore awaiting state government clearance.
KMRL has directed contractor Afcons Infrastructure to add manpower. The first five stations remain targeted for June 30, 2026, with the full 11-station corridor by December 31, 2026.
Kochi Metro Launches UPI Payments at Ticket Vending Machines Across All Stations, August 2025
Kochi Metro Rail Limited rolled out UPI payments at ticket vending machines across its stations, inaugurated by Kerala transport commissioner C H Nagaraju at JLN Stadium station on August 4, 2025. Commuters can now scan a QR code at any TVM and pay through any UPI app instead of using cash, cutting queue time at counters.
The metro already offers QR tickets via the Kochi1 app and WhatsApp ticketing, paid by UPI, cards or the Kochi1 card.
