Meerut Metro is the local rapid transit network serving Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, operated by NCRTC on the same elevated and underground corridor as the Delhi-Meerut RRTS (Namo Bharat). The 23.6 km line runs from Meerut South to Modipuram with 12 operational stations, opening in full on 22 February 2026 alongside the completion of the RRTS corridor.

Meerut Metro And Namo Bharat Share Same Track And Station For First Time In India, 2026

Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat RRTS started operating on shared tracks and shared stations from February 22, 2026, the day both services launched together in Meerut. PM Narendra Modi noted at the inauguration that it was the first time in India that a metro and a regional rapid rail service would run on the same track and from the same station. The shared infrastructure uses European Train Control System (ETCS) Level-2 signalling over an LTE backbone. Four stations -- Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram -- serve as interchange points.

Meerut Metro Launches February 2026: PM Modi Inaugurates 23 KM Line Sharing Track With Namo Bharat

Meerut Metro began commercial service on February 22, 2026, when PM Narendra Modi flagged off trains from Shatabdi Nagar station alongside the Namo Bharat RRTS launch. The 23 km line runs 11 stations between Meerut South and Modipuram, covering the full stretch in about 30 minutes. Trains reach a maximum speed of around 120 kmph, among the fastest metro services in India, using three-car air-conditioned rakes that carry close to 700 passengers each. Meerut Metro is India's first local metro to share tracks and platforms with a regional rapid transit system.

Meerut Metro: Track Laying Completed At Begumpul, India's Biggest Underground Interchange Station

Track laying work was completed on both up and down lines at Begumpul station in Meerut in March 2025, marking a key construction milestone for Meerut Metro. Begumpul is the city's only underground station and its largest, built about 246 metres long, 24.5 metres wide and 22 metres deep across four levels. The station will let Meerut Metro and Namo Bharat RRTS trains run on the same tracks for the first time in India, with finishing work including flooring, marble laying and platform screen doors underway.
