Delhi Metro Overview
Delhi Metro is India's largest rapid transit network, operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) — a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Inaugurated in December 2002 with the Shahdara–Tis Hazari section of the Red Line, the network has grown to 275 metro stations across 12 colour-coded lines. Trains run daily from 5:00 AM to 11:30 PM, with peak-hour frequency of 2–3 minutes on the busiest corridors.
Delhi Metro spans the entire National Capital Region (NCR), connecting Delhi with five satellite cities — Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, and Gurugram, Faridabad, and Bahadurgarh in Haryana. Key interchange hubs include Rajiv Chowk (Yellow and Blue lines), Kashmere Gate (Red, Yellow, and Violet lines — Delhi Metro's largest interchange), Central Secretariat (Yellow and Violet lines), Hauz Khas (Yellow and Magenta lines), and Yamuna Bank (Blue main and Blue branch lines). The Airport Express (Orange Line) connects New Delhi railway station to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) in approximately 20 minutes, serving Aerocity and T3 Terminal. The Aqua Line, operated by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC), extends connectivity to Greater Noida via 21 stations.
Metro fare on Delhi Metro is calculated on a distance-slab basis. Regular commuters can use the DMRC Smart Card or the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for discounted travel and faster boarding. Single-journey tokens are available at station booking counters and automated ticketing machines. For queries, the DMRC helpline is 155370. MetroYatra provides station-wise train timings, platform details, metro fare charts, and route maps for all 275 Delhi Metro stations.

Delhi Metro News & Updates
Delhi Metro news covers new stations, route changes, service updates, and official announcements.
Delhi Metro Magenta Line: Construction Begins on 12.3-km Inderlok-Indraprastha Underground Corridor
Delhi Metro Magenta Line construction formally began on the Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor on 9 July 2026, when Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched diaphragm wall work at the upcoming Sarai Rohilla metro station.
The fully underground, 12.3-km extension will add 10 stations, including Inderlok, Sarai Rohilla, Jhandewalan Temple, Nabi Karim, New Delhi, Delhi Gate and Indraprastha. Once complete, the Magenta Line will run to nearly 89 km, Delhi Metro's longest line.
PM Modi had laid the corridor's foundation stone on 8 March 2026.
Delhi Metro Pink Line: Ghaziabad Seeks DPR For 16-KM Vaishali-Gokulpuri Link Via Hindon Airport
The Ghaziabad Development Authority has asked DMRC to prepare a Detailed Project Report for a proposed 16-km metro corridor connecting Vaishali, the Blue Line's current terminus, to Gokulpuri on the Pink Line. The route would run via Sahibabad, Mohan Nagar, Pasunda and Hindon Civil Terminal, giving the terminal its first-ever metro access, with around seven stations expected.
GDA officials said the extended alignment is meant to serve the growing populations of Indirapuram, Vasundhara and Vaishali. Funding remains a hurdle: this and two related Ghaziabad corridors together carry an estimated combined cost of about Rs 7,500 crore.
Noida Metro Aqua Line: Sector 51 Skywalk To Blue Line Still Shut A Year After Completion
A 300-metre air-conditioned skywalk connecting the Aqua Line's Sector 51 metro station to the Delhi Metro Blue Line's Sector 52 station remains shut, more than a year after construction was completed. Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh said finishing work is still under way and a structural beam blocking the walkway must be demolished before it can open to the public.
In the meantime, thousands of daily interchange passengers must use a poorly maintained 300-metre street-level stretch affected by vendors, autos and waterlogging.
Delhi Metro Red Line: DMRC Refurbishes 31 of 70 Ageing Trains on Red and Blue Lines by April 2026
Delhi Metro Red Line trains that have run for 19 to 24 years are being refurbished under a mid-life upgrade programme covering 70 trains shared with the Blue Line, DMRC confirmed in April 2026, with 31 trains already completed.
The refurbishment repaints coach interiors and driver cabins, upgrades electrical panels, and fits IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information Systems, CCTV cameras, fire detection sensors and LCD-based dynamic route maps.
DMRC is carrying out the upgrade in a phased manner so daily Red Line services are not disrupted, with the full programme due for completion by November 2027.
Delhi Metro Handles Record 235.8 Crore Passenger Journeys in 2025, Daily Average 64.6 Lakh
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) handled 235.8 crore passenger journeys in 2025, according to official figures released in March 2026. The annual total surpasses the 2024 figure of 223.5 crore, with daily average ridership at 64.6 lakh passengers.
The single-day ridership record was set on 8 August 2025, when 81.87 lakh passengers travelled on the network — exceeding the previous peak of 78.67 lakh recorded on 18 November 2024. Delhi Metro remains India's largest rapid transit network and accounts for over 55% of total daily metro ridership in the country.
Delhi Metro Pink Line Now India's First Ring Metro: PM Modi Inaugurates Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur Stretch
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur corridor of the Delhi Metro Pink Line on 8 March 2026, completing India's first fully operational ring metro network. The new section adds 8 stations — Burari, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, and Maujpur-Babarpur — to an existing line that had run as two disconnected sections since 2018.
The Pink Line (Line 7) now forms a complete 73.49 km circular loop with 46 stations: 43 on the ring and 3 on the Shiv Vihar branch. The corridor features a new bridge across the Yamuna and a double-decker viaduct carrying both a metro line and a road flyover. Maujpur-Babarpur serves as an interchange with the Red Line (Line 1), improving east–north Delhi connectivity.
Delhi Metro Magenta Line Extended By 9.9 KM: PM Modi Inaugurates Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park Section
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Magenta Line's Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park extension on March 8, 2026, alongside the Pink Line's ring-completing Majlis Park-Maujpur Babarpur stretch, as part of Delhi Metro projects worth roughly Rs 33,500 crore.
The 9.9-km elevated Magenta Line extension adds seven stations, taking the Magenta Line's total length to about 49 km. Haiderpur Badli Mor interchanges with the Yellow Line, Pitam Pura with the Red Line, and Majlis Park with the Pink Line.
Delhi Metro Violet Line Gets Centre's Nod for 24-km Ballabhgarh-Palwal Extension in October 2025
Delhi Metro Violet Line will stretch further into Haryana after the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approved a 24-km extension from Ballabhgarh to Palwal in October 2025.
The elevated corridor will run along NH-44 from the existing Raja Nahar Singh metro station in Ballabhgarh to Palwal Bus Stand, adding 10 new stations at an estimated cost of Rs 4,320 crore.
RITES Limited will carry out the techno-feasibility study, and the extension is targeted for completion within three years, by around 2028.
Delhi Metro Magenta Line: Trial Runs Begin On Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park Elevated Stretch
Delhi Metro began trial runs on the Magenta Line's Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park stretch in September 2025 after completing electrification and signal work on the elevated corridor. The 9-km section features a Communication-Based Train Control signalling system and six stations: Deepali Chowk, Pitam Pura, Prashant Vihar, Uttari Pitam Pura, Haiderpur Badli Mor and Majlis Park.
Three of these are interchange stations, connecting to the Red, Yellow and Pink Lines. DMRC officials said passenger services were expected to begin once trials and safety clearances were complete.
Rapid Metro Gurugram Operations To Shift From DMRC To GMRL As Ridership Rises 13.59%
The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation has begun transferring Rapid Metro Gurugram's operations from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to Gurugram Metro Rail Limited, with joint committees managing the transition. The move comes as ridership on the 11-station loop line rose 13.59% year-on-year to 62.49 lakh passengers between April and July 2025, with fare revenue up 11.87%.
Non-fare income, including advertising rights, also grew, reaching Rs 21.11 crore for the period, while operating expenses fell 6.33%.

Delhi Metro's network spans well over 390 km across its 12 lines, making it India's largest metro system by route length.
The fastest way is the Airport Express Line (Orange Line), running from New Delhi Railway Station through Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Aerocity, and Terminal 3 (IGI Airport) — about 20 minutes end-to-end for ₹60. It interchanges with the Yellow Line at New Delhi and the Blue Line at Dwarka Sector 21. The Magenta Line also has a dedicated Terminal 1 IGI Airport station for budget carriers flying from Terminal 1.
Rajiv Chowk station (Yellow + Blue Line interchange) is directly under Connaught Place — the busiest interchange on the network, so allow extra time for crowds during peak hours. Patel Chowk and Barakhamba Road stations are also within walking distance if you want to avoid the congestion.
For Red Fort, get off at Lal Quila station on the Violet Line, which opens directly opposite the entrance — Chandni Chowk on the Yellow Line is a good alternative if combining the visit with Old Delhi market exploration. For Akshardham Temple, Akshardham station on the Blue Line is directly adjacent to the complex, a short walk to the main entrance.
Qutab Minar station on the Yellow Line is the nearest, about 1.5 km from the monument — you'll need an auto or short cab from the station to the entrance.
The Delhi Metro Smart Card is a stored-value card giving a 10% fare discount on every trip, plus an extra 10% MJQRT off-peak discount (before 8 AM, 12-5 PM, after 9 PM on weekdays, and all day Sunday/holidays). Cards are sold at any station's customer care counter for ₹150 (₹50 refundable deposit + ₹100 initial balance), and can be recharged at counters, ticket machines, and the Delhi Metro Sarthi app. Cards work across all DMRC lines but not the separately-run Noida Aqua Line.
The most important interchanges are Rajiv Chowk (Yellow + Blue), Kashmere Gate (Red + Yellow + Violet — the network's only triple interchange), Central Secretariat (Yellow + Violet), Mandi House (Blue + Violet), Inderlok (Red + Green), Kirti Nagar (Blue + Green), Lajpat Nagar (Violet + Pink), Hauz Khas (Yellow + Magenta), Botanical Garden (Blue + Magenta), and Dwarka Sector 21 (Blue + Airport Express).
Yes. Every train has a dedicated women-only coach, typically the first coach in the direction of travel and marked with pink markings on the platform. Men entering this coach can be fined ₹250 by metro security.
Folding bicycles are allowed at all times; full-size bicycles are permitted only outside peak hours on selected stations and lines — check DMRC's current cycle policy before travelling. Pets are not permitted on trains, except service animals accompanying passengers with disabilities.
Visit the Lost and Found office at Kashmere Gate station's customer care counter, or call the DMRC helpline at 155370; items recovered are typically held for 90 days. Free Wi-Fi is available at most stations and on Airport Express trains — standard line trains don't yet have onboard Wi-Fi.
The Delhi Metro 24x7 helpline is 155370, or email helpline@dmrc.org. A separate helpline (011-23415480, 8800550490) is available for missing, separated, women, child, and specially-abled commuters. Visit delhimetrorail.com for fares, timings, and service updates.
