Kanpur Metro Overview

Kanpur Metro is Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation's (UPMRC) rapid transit system for Kanpur, one of the state's largest industrial and commercial cities. Its Orange Line runs 15 km with 14 operational Kanpur Metro stations between IIT Kanpur and Kanpur Central, fully elevated, with trains running daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

The line connects IIT Kanpur and the Kalyanpur residential belt to LLR Hospital and Moti Jheel, before continuing through Chunniganj, Naveen Market, and Bada Chauraha into the old city, terminating at Kanpur Central railway station. The Chunniganj-Kanpur Central stretch (5 stations) opened on 30 May 2025, completing the line's current extent; a further extension toward Naubasta was in final safety trials as of mid-2026. Kanpur Metro does not yet have an interchange station, since only one line is currently open.

Kanpur Metro Fare Chart

Kanpur Metro charges fares by distance, with separate Token and Smart Card prices. Smart Card users pay less on every trip.

Fare is station-based, with a minimum fare of ₹10 and a maximum single-journey fare of ₹40 on the current 14-station corridor.

Smart card users receive a 10% discount on every journey (same UPMRC-wide policy as Lucknow Metro).

Kanpur Metro Corridor 1: CMRS Completes Safety Inspection of Kanpur Central-Naubasta Section, June 2026

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), Nilabhra Sengupta, concluded a three-day statutory safety inspection of Kanpur Metro Corridor 1's remaining Kanpur Central-Naubasta section on 28 June 2026, alongside UPMRC officials. The five-member team checked signalling and telecommunication systems, civil structures, track stability, traction power supply and fire safety arrangements. Once cleared, Corridor 1 will run fully from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta.

Kanpur Metro 2026: UPMRC Proposes 7 New Corridors Spanning 83.6 KM

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation has proposed seven new corridors totalling 83.658 km to expand the Kanpur Metro network under the city's Comprehensive Mobility Plan, reported in June 2026. The Uttar Pradesh government has already approved the detailed project report for the 8.078 km Naubasta-Barra-8 corridor. The six other proposed corridors include Unnao-Namak Factory (35.81 km), Naubasta-Chakeri (14.6 km) and others. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, pending central government approval.

Kanpur Metro Network Set to Double to 33 KM, 29 Stations by End of 2026: UPMRC MD

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation managing director Sushil Kumar said on 31 December 2025 that Kanpur Metro aims to expand its operational network from 16 km to 33 km by the end of 2026, taking the number of stations from 14 to 29. The plan covers Corridor 1's remaining stretch to Naubasta, targeted for around March 2026, and Corridor 2 between CSA University and Barra-8, targeted for end of 2026.

Kanpur Metro Orange Line 2025: PM Modi Opens 5 New Underground Stations to Kanpur Central

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the underground extension of Kanpur Metro's Orange Line on 30 May 2025, opening 5 new stations: Chunniganj, Bada Chauraha, Naveen Market, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central. The extension takes Corridor 1 to 14 stations running from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central, connecting landmarks such as Lal Imli, Z Square Mall and Green Park Stadium. Trains run from 6 AM to 10 PM, with fares starting at Rs 10.
