Mumbai Metro Overview
Mumbai Metro is the rapid transit network for Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), built to supplement the city's overcrowded suburban railway. The network runs 76 Mumbai Metro stations across 6 lines — Line 1 (Blue), Line 2A (Yellow), Line 2B, Line 3 (Purple), Line 7 (Red), and Line 9 — with trains running daily from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM.
Line 2A, Line 7, and Line 9 meet at Dahisar East, a three-way interchange, while Line 1 crosses Line 3 at Marol Naka. Line 3 (Aarey JVLR–Cuffe Parade, 27 stations) is Mumbai's only fully underground corridor, running the length of the island city from the SEEPZ IT hub through Bandra Kurla Complex and Worli to South Mumbai, past Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Churchgate. Line 2B and Line 9, both opened in 2026, are still partially operational extensions serving Chembur-Mankhurd and the Dahisar-Mira Road corridor respectively.
Mumbai Metro fare is calculated on a distance-slab basis, with a rechargeable smart card accepted at all stations for faster, discounted travel over QR-code single-journey tickets. Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) Fares
Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line, Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ) is operated by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL), a separate operator from the rest of the network. Fare is distance-based, with tier boundaries based on approximate corridor distance.

Mumbai Metro Hits Highest-Ever Single-Day Ridership of 3.65 Lakh Amid Monsoon Rains, July 2026
Maha Mumbai Metro recorded its highest-ever single-day ridership of 3,65,845 passenger journeys on July 9, 2026, as heavy monsoon rain disrupted road traffic across the city. The figure surpasses the network's previous record of 3,58,115 journeys set on June 23, 2026, which itself had surpassed a June 19, 2026 high of 3,57,895 journeys.
This is the third time the network has broken its own single-day ridership record during the current monsoon season.
Mumbai Metro Line 9 Opens First Phase: Dahisar East to Kashigaon Corridor Inaugurated, April 2026
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9 on April 7, 2026. The elevated stretch, approximately 5 km long, connects Dahisar East to Kashigaon in Mira Road through four stations: Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Mira Gaon and Kashigaon.
This is the first direct metro link between Mumbai's northern suburbs and the Mira-Bhayander region, and Line 9 will run as an integrated corridor with Line 7, enabling direct travel between Andheri East and Mira-Bhayander.
Mumbai Metro Line 2B Opens First Phase: Diamond Garden to Mandale Corridor Inaugurated, April 2026
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 2B on April 7, 2026. The 5.53-km stretch runs from Diamond Garden to Maharashtra Nagar-Mandale, with five stations covering Diamond Garden, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Devnar, Mankhurd and Maharashtra Nagar-Mandale.
The corridor gives the eastern suburbs their first metro interchange with Central Railway's Harbour Line at Mankhurd, part of the larger 24.6-km DN Nagar-Mandale Line 2B project.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Carries Over 38 Lakh Riders in First Full Month After Cuffe Parade Opening
Mumbai Metro Line 3, the Aqua Line, recorded 38.63 lakh (3,863,741) passenger journeys between October 9 and October 31, 2025, its first weeks of full operation from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR. Average weekday ridership stood at 1,41,024 commuters, and the line hit a single-day high of 1,82,461 riders on October 31, 2025.
The steady rise reflects growing commuter uptake of the 33.5-km fully underground corridor since its full completion earlier that month.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Fully Operational: PM Modi Opens Final Cuffe Parade Stretch, October 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3 on October 8, 2025, connecting Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli) to Cuffe Parade through 11 new underground stations including Mumbai Central, Girgaon, CSMT Metro and Churchgate. Passenger service began the next day.
With this, the entire 33.5-km Aqua Line, Mumbai's first fully underground metro with 27 stations, is now fully operational end to end. Travel time between Cuffe Parade and Aarey JVLR has dropped to under an hour from 2-3 hours by road.
Mumbai Metro Line 1 Marks 11 Years: Blue Line Carries Over 111 Crore Commuters Since 2014
Mumbai Metro Line 1, the city's first metro corridor, completed 11 years of operation on June 8, 2025. Since its launch in 2014, the 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Blue Line has carried over 111 crore commuters, running 444 trips daily at a peak-hour frequency of under 3.5 minutes.
The line maintains 99.99% punctuality and has crossed 12.66 lakh train trips. Ghatkopar is the busiest station on the line with over 30 crore commuters, followed by Andheri with 23 crore.
Mumbai Metro Line 7 Gets CCRS Safety Certification for Full-Speed 80 kmph Operations, January 2025
The Chief Commissioner of Rail Safety (CCRS) granted safety certification to Mumbai Metro Line 7 and Line 2A in January 2025, clearing both corridors for full-capacity operations at 80 kmph. The lines had been running at a temporary speed limit of 50-60 kmph at some locations since their 2022 launch.
Line 7 runs 16.5 km from Andheri East to Dahisar East with 13 stations, while Line 2A runs 18.6 km from Dahisar to Andheri West with 17 stations. The two lines together carry over 2.5 lakh passengers daily.
Mumbai Metro Line 2A Launches WhatsApp-Based Ticketing, Eliminating Paper Tickets, October 2024
Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited launched a WhatsApp-based ticketing service for Metro Line 2A and Line 7 on October 11, 2024, coinciding with Navratri. Commuters can message a dedicated WhatsApp number, or scan a QR code displayed at stations, to book tickets through a conversational chat interface without needing a paper ticket.
Line 2A runs from Andheri West to Dahisar and Line 7 from Andheri East to Dahisar. UPI payments carry no extra charge, while card payments attract a small fee.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Opens First Stretch: PM Modi Inaugurates Aarey-BKC Underground Section
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3, the Aqua Line, on October 5, 2024. The 12-km underground section runs from Aarey JVLR to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) with 10 stations, and passenger service began on October 7, 2024.
